The Dornburg Castles are a group of castles and gardens near Dornburg, about 10 kilometres east of Jena in Thuringia, Germany. There are three castles: the Old Castle, the Renaissance Castle and the Rococo Castle. Together with their gardens, these castles form an impressive cultural landscape.
Old Castle: This castle has medieval origins, but was later remodelled in the Renaissance style. It served as a summer residence for the Dukes of Saxe-Weimar.
Renaissance Castle: Also known as the New Castle, it was built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style. It is characterised by its distinctive architecture and inner courtyard.
Rococo Castle: The youngest of the three castles was built in the 18th century in the Rococo style. It is characterised by its elegant and playful architectural elements.
The Dornburg castles are not only architecturally interesting, but are also known for their historic gardens, which have been landscaped over the centuries. Today, the complex is a popular excursion destination and a venue for cultural events.
