About the artwork
This picture was taken in the old medina of Marrakesh, Morocco. The image shows a brown wooden door at the centre of the picture. The door is closed and has a simple look, with no eye-catching decorations. What makes the picture special is the combination of materials and colours. The facade in which the door is placed is plastered white. The plaster is not quite smooth, creating a natural, slightly weathered surface typical of many buildings in Marrakech's medina.
No decorations can be seen above or around the door, which keeps the image calm. The transition between the white façade and the brown door gives a clear contrast without looking too harsh. The light shadows and natural daylight add texture to the wall and door. At the bottom of the wall, you may still see a narrow edge where the white render ends, and the street level begins.
This picture shows a small fragment of daily life in Marrakesh's medina, where traditional architectural styles have been preserved.
