Interior of the Palatine Chapel in Aachen. The chapel is the oldest part of Aachen Cathedral and was built in 796. On the ceiling of the octagonal Palatine Chapel, mosaics show the four symbols of the evangelists. Along the eaves stand 24 saints in white clothing, holding a golden crown. Christ is depicted at the top as a triumphant ruler of the world. The chapel was built by order of Charlemagne. After his death he was buried in it. In the foreground the Barbarossa chandelier, a 12th-century chandelier.
