Syringe cartridges are filled with nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. It is used in hospitals as a painkiller. These cartridges can be bought at household stores for use in the kitchen. But you can also fill a balloon with it and breathe it in, which gives you a short intoxication. Excessive use can lead to permanent paralysis, brain damage or death.
The drug is especially popular among young people from the age of 12 because it is cheap, legal and easy to obtain. The streets, squares and parks of Amsterdam are filled with it.
