Devils Tower is a large monolith of intrusive rock in northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. The monolith is 386 metres high. The summit is 1558 metres above sea level.
Devils Tower is the first National Monument in the United States, opened on 24 September 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt.
The region's original inhabitants had a myth about the rock's origins centuries ago. There were once said to have been seven young girls who secretly went dancing under the stars. During their dance, they are said to have been attacked by a bear. As they fled from the bear, they landed on a rock. They begged the rock to save them. The rock is said to have subsequently grown into a tall monolith: Devils Tower. The seven girls are said to have turned into the Pleiades, a group of stars that can be seen above Devils Tower several times a year. The bear's nail marks can still be seen on the sides of the rock. The word 'bear' appears in many Native American names for the rock; e.g. Bear Lodge.
