About "Desire is a cruel companion (I)"

About the artwork

For me, the title "Desire is a cruel companion (I)" reflects the unbridled, destructive energy that springs from the deepest inner desire. In this painting, I wanted to capture the raw intensity of a moment in which desire overshadows everything else - it eats into the mind, tugs at the senses and leaves no room for rest. The face, torn open in a scream of agony and despair, shows not only a physical expression, but an inner tearing caused by the deep pain of desire.

The red background represents the burning heat of desire - a colour that stands for passion and violence at the same time. It surrounds the figure, penetrating its form as if desire were consuming it completely. The black and grey brushstrokes that cut through the face represent for me the sharp, unrelenting edges of this emotion, tearing down everything in its path.

For me, desire is not just a powerful force, but a dangerous, cruel companion that forces its way into everyday life and eclipses everything else. This force drives us, makes us live and strive, but it also demands a price. The scream in this picture is an expression of the inability to escape this power - a moment of complete surrender to the violence of our own inner needs.

This work is the first part of a deeper exploration of the destructive yet vital aspects of desire. It shows how much we are dominated by this emotion, how it drives us and consumes us at the same time. For me, the pain and rage of the scream epitomise the relentless nature of desire, which is always with us - a constant companion that rarely gives us peace and yet compels us to keep striving.
