About ‘Debre Berhan: Debre Birhan Selassie kerk’ by Maarten Verhees

De Debre Birhan Selassie kerk is gebouwd in opdracht van keizer Yasu de Grote (1682 – 1702). Het is een van de mooiste kerken in Ethiopië en maakt deel uit van een klooster. Een hoge muur omringt het complex. De kerk ligt net buiten de stad Gondar, op een heuvel in de schaduw van prachtige oude bomen. Via het poortgebouw kom je op het kloosterterrein. Boven in de poort hangen kerkklokken die ooit geschonken zijn door de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie. Khodha Murad, een Armeniër, die toentertijd bij keizer Yasu in dienst was reisde in die periode meerdere keren naar het oosten en bracht vele geschenken mee waaronder de twee kerkklokken. Dit gebaar had de onderliggende bedoeling de handelsrelatie met keizer Yasu te verstevigen.De schilderingen in de rechthoekige kerk zijn nog in originele staat en nog nooit gerestaureerd. Prachtig is het houten plafond dat opgeluisterd wordt door vele serafijnenkopjes. De engeltjes hebben allen een andere gelaatsuitdrukking en kijken met grote ronde ogen alle richtingen op. Kleurrijke taferelen bedekken de wanden waaronder koning David die op zijn lier speelt. Mohammed die vastgebonden op zijn paard door de duivel wordt afgevoerd en de kruisiging met koning Yasu geschilderd aan de voet van het kruis. In de Ethiopische schilderkunst werd, wanneer een icoon of schilderij geschonken werd de gever aan de voet van de heilige afgebeeld. Ook in deze kerk ontbreekt Sint Joris met de draak niet en boven de ingang naar het allerheiligste bevindt zich
