Death Valley ("death valley") is a desert valley in the U.S. state of California. The valley runs north to south, between the Amargosa Range in the east and the Panamint Range in the west. Death Valley is one of the hottest places in the world in summer, along with some desert areas in Africa and the Middle East. The Badwater Basin in Death Valley is the lowest point in North America at 86 m below sea level.
Death Valley, along with its surroundings, is part of Death Valley National Park, which is largely located in the state of California (most of it in Inyo County) and a small part in the state of Nevada. The national park is located in the northern part of the Mojave Desert and in the Great Basin, a large area that does not drain to the sea. Death Valley National Park includes a desert area with salt flats, rock formations, canyons, sand dunes and mountains.
