In western Namibia lies the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world. The dunes have a striking red color due to the large amount of iron in the soil. The desert contains several valleys. The best known is the Dead Vlei, a valley in the desert that also contains many dead trees. Near the Dead Vlei are the Hidden Vlei and the Sossusvlei. In the area around these vilas you can make a number of walks over the dunes and through the valleys. The walks are, due to the loose sand and high temperatures, quite heavy but fantastic to make. The view from the top of the dunes over the environment and the white dry valley with the dead trees in it is just overwhelming.
