The DeLorean, which is often referred to as DMC-12, was originally given this abbreviation because it was supposed to be priced at $12,000, which would be 76,000 euros today, adjusted for inflation, as of 2022. From this, the project code DMC-12000 was derived and later shortened to DMC-12. Before that, there was also never a model designation, as is normal for all vehicles, it was initially simply the "DeLorean" and remained so until today.
Built the DeLorean was only 21 months from 1981 with about 9200 vehicles, übring are still over 6,500 DMC-12. Worldwide it became known as Steven Spielberg with his "Back to the Future" trilogy (Back to the Future) probably the final image of the car, the "time machine" created director Robert Zemeckis.
