Daphne is a nymph from Greek mythology. In the myth, Daphne is pursued by Apollo because he had been hit by Cupid's arrows to love her. Daphne, however, was not at all keen on this and wanted to escape Apollo's attempts at seduction. Daphne begged the river god Peneus to help her and he turned her into a laurel tree.
This digital painting is a modern and exciting translation of the ancient story written by Ovid in his collection 'Metamorphoses'. In an abstract way, MadameRuiz gives form to the transformation of woman into laurel tree.
The woman's clothing is surprisingly provocative, while the man in the form of a mystical phantom imposes himself on her.
Is this intrusiveness reality, past tense, or is it merely playing out in the woman's mind. And is this desirable or undesirable? And is the woman mistress or victim?
An old-fashioned story and yet wringingly topical.
