About ‘Damiatebrug Dordrecht’ by Photo Dante

Damiatebrug Year of construction: 1855 Build: double cast iron drawbridge Architect: G.N. ItzDe Damiatebrug over the mouth of the Wolwevershaven was built in the nineteenth century after a design by the city architect G.N. Itz, who designed the majority of the Dordrecht bridges. Drawbridges were initially made of wood, but from 1837 cast iron was also used in the Netherlands. The bridge was originally made of the easy to form cast iron and beaten iron. In the same year, however, it had to be rebuilt because, two weeks after commissioning, one of the balances had been deposited downwards. The use of different types of iron was still in its infancy and therefore the cast iron was replaced by wrought iron for the bridge to function properly. The bridge has a passage width of 14.5 meters.
