About the artwork

Crucian pelican
The bird is 160 to 180 cm long and has a wingspan of 270 to 350 cm.[2] The crucian pelican is similar to the pink pelican. In both pelican species, the plumage is predominantly white. The underside of the wings is almost entirely white, except for the edges of the flight feathers. In the pink pelican, the arm and hand pins are completely black, therefore the back of the underwing is uniformly black, while this black is absent in the Dalmatian pelican. The iris is light and the feathers on the crown are sloppily crested (the pink pelican has a dark iris and the skin around the eye is pink and there is a neat white crest). The legs are grey (flesh-coloured in the pink pelican). The throat pouch is orange-red (yellow in the pink pelican) and accommodates plenty of food. The plumage is similar in both sexes.
Distribution and habitat
The Dalmatian Pelican lives in Eurasia, mainly in south-eastern Europe, Asia Minor, Central Asia and East Asia. It is a migratory bird, with breeding birds from Europe migrating to the eastern Mediterranean and birds from Asia wintering further south in Iran, Iraq the Indian subcontinent and along the coasts of China. The bird is found in both freshwater marshes and coastal wetlands such as lagoons.
