In Greek mythology, cyclopes were prevalent. Monsters with one eye. Later, in present-day Greece, people found skulls with one hole. These were from elephants and in that hole there was no eye but a trunk. At least that is how the story goes. One of the most famous works of art with a cyclops is by Odilon Redon. That's also what I always immediately think of when something one-eyed appears. This work seems to represent a floating cyclops, but it could just as easily be a star, or a planet with a strange aura.
