One of the first animals you see and hear are the squirrels. There are about 10 different species living in the Rocky Mountains. They are curious, courageous and a bit shabby. You can easily find them, but capturing them in a beautiful pose is another thing.
This one is called the chickaree and is Banff's smallest squirrel living in the trees. It taking a look hanging on a branch above our picnic table where we just want to have breakfast. Chickarees are very territorial and can defend their territory with much physical noise and violence. They quiver, stomp with their feet and blame any intruders loudly to let them go.
