About ‘Cuijk’ by Lex Schulte

Cuijk on the Maas. Skyline made using infrared photography. This makes the photo with only the infrared light. Because there is much less infrared light you automatically get a very long exposure time. For this photo it was around ten minutes. This gives air and water a uniform tint and haze.
Characteristic of Cuijk is the St. Martin's Church, which can already be clearly seen from afar when approaching Cuijk. The Martinus Church is a Neo-Gothic basilica with two towers that was built in the period 1911-1913 after a design by Caspar Franssen. The paintings in the interior are designed by Hans Mengelberg and executed by Johannes Cornelis Wilbrink. The altarpiece of the high altar was made by Hendrik van der Geld on its own initiative for the Sint-Janskathedraal in 's-Hertogenbosch, but this eventually ended up in Cuijk. The side altars and Pietà are also from Van der Geld. In 1945 the church was severely damaged by the German army's warfare on the other side of the Meuse; the Cuijk mill and the Cuijk town hall were also badly damaged. The damage could still be repaired (interior and exterior). In 2009 a major restoration of the church was started and this was completed in 2011.
