Cruquius Steam Pumping Station.
Pumping station De Cruquius from 1849 is one of the three pumping stations used to pump the Haarlemmermeer dry between 1849 and 1852. It is the largest steam engine in the world and was decommissioned in 1933. It is among the top 100 Dutch national monuments. It is named after the Dutch hydraulic engineer Nicolaus Samuelis Cruquius, born as Nicolaas Kruik in 1678 in West-Vlieland. The combination of engineering and architecture make De Cruquius an important industrial monument. The pumping station, in turn, has given the name Cruquius to the village located close by.
