About the artwork

Café de Sluyswacht is a historic café in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It is located in a picturesque spot along the Oudeschans, near the Montelbaan tower. The building itself dates from the 17th century and was originally a lock keeper's house for the lock keeper who operated the nearby lock gates and regulated the water levels in the canal.

Today, Café de Sluyswacht is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. It has retained much of its historical charm, with its quaint exterior and cosy interior.

The Zuiderkerk is one of the most prominent landmarks in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It has historical significance as one of the city's oldest churches and a fine example of Dutch Renaissance architecture. Construction of the Zuiderkerk began in 1603 and was completed in 1611. The church was built during the Golden Age, when Amsterdam was a thriving centre of trade and culture.

The Zuiderkerk is characterised by its distinctive octagonal shape, which differs from the traditional cruciform layout of churches at the time. The design was influenced by Italian Renaissance architecture. The church has a tall spire with a bell tower, adding to its grandeur. It is closely associated with the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn. He lived nearby and is said to have used the church's tower as a vantage point for some of his paintings.

Overall, the Zuiderkerk is a testament to Amsterdam's rich history and architectural heritage and attracts visitors from all over the world.
