Croesus (c. 595 BC - c. 546 BC)[1] was king of Lydia from 560 BC to 546 BC.
Croesus was, as far as can be ascertained, the first Asian to subjugate the Greeks and make them indebted to him, or to make treaties with them. He was considered the richest man in the world and gave precious gifts to the Greek temples and oracles, especially to Delphi.
His enormous wealth gave rise to legends. According to one of these legends, the statesman Solon of ancient Athens said at a meeting, not impressed by Croesus' fortune: Keep in store until one's death the word happy, until then one should not call him happy, but only fortunate.
