The port of Rotterdam was growing out of its capacity when more and bigger ships wanted to enter the Nieuwe Waterweg. To accommodate this Maasvlakte 1 to the north of Rotterdam was reclaimed from the sea. Maasvlakte 2 was created as an extension of Maasvlakte 1 due to the continuing growth in the storage and transshipment of containers. It now houses the most modern container terminals, handles the largest container ships and assembles the gigantic foundation piles of wind turbines for new offshore wind farms.
