Afrikaner cattle (Afrikaans Afrikanerbees) are an indigenous breed of cattle and the most common breed in South Africa. The Afrikaner cattle is a Bos taurus indicus, which was probably brought south by the Khoikhoi (Hottentots) along the west coast of Africa. The European Bos taurus cattle breed did not exert any influence on the development of the African cattle breed. A stable African cattle breed was already in existence before Jan van Riebeeck set foot in Cape Colony in 1652. The first European cattle breeds were not introduced there until 1706.
