Fries-Hollands (FH) is a cow breed that has its origins in the Netherlands. In the past, a large part of the Dutch livestock consisted of these mostly black-and-white animals. There are still about 2000 animals in the Netherlands and this breed is on the list of rare pet breeds of the Foundation for Rare Pets. A small number of animals are traditionally red-skinned, here there are still 250 of them. They are so-called dual-purpose cows, which means that this breed is suitable for both milk production and meat production. Today, most Dutch farmers specialise in dairy or meat farming.
Dairy farmers in the Netherlands mainly have Holstein-Friesian cows. This breed originates from the Frisian-Dutch breed. The best dairy cows of this breed were exported to America at the end of the 19th century and bred there to the milk typical Holstein-Friesian breed. The Holstein cows drove away the Frisian-Dutch cattle in a short period of time.
