About ‘Country landscape’ by Dan Courtice

A location often visited when walking the dogs. This scene, as with much of my work, was heavily influenced by Camille Corot, a French landscape painter of the 19th century. My objective was to take an image that represents my own interpretation of this location. As with many painters, detail is added to the areas that focuses the eye. In this case it is the hedgerow in the foreground which runs parallel with the track that leads off into the distance, where detail is reduced. I wanted the image to appear soft, so blacks were reduced and a subtle tint of blue was added.

There is a texture added and techniques are used to give the photograph a painterly feel. The colours have been reduced slightly, adding a sense of age. Using my technique I am able to play with light and contrast, softening certain areas and strengthening others, which enables me to draw the viewers eye to a specific part of the image, very much like a painter would do. I aim to produce images that evoke a strong sense of nostalgia, and my subjects are almost always trees
