George (Georgius) of Cappadocia or Saint George († April 23, 303) is a martyr and saint. Since 1222 he has been patron (patron saint) of England (English: Saint George). Also, as Sant Jordi, he is the patron saint of the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia and is patron of scouting. He is also the patron saint of Amersfoort.
Saint George is traditionally depicted with a dragon, which he is said to have killed. The dragon here symbolizes paganism. Defeating the dragon symbolizes the conversion of a pagan country or city to Christianity.
The city was tyrannized by a dragon. Every day he devoured two sheep, which were sacrificed to him so that he would keep quiet. When the last sheep disappeared in this way, the dragon demanded human sacrifices. In doing so, its fate also fell on the king's daughter.
Cosimo Tura (Ferrara, ± 1430 - April 1495), also known as Il Cosme or Cosmè Tura, was an Italian painter of the early Renaissance (or Quattrocento). He was considered one of the founders of the School of Ferrara.
