Classic impressionism
Seascape with wild waves. The work was commissioned by naval officer Beckman, Cornelis Vreedenburgh. Beckman served in the navy's submarine service and thus had a thing for the sea. He married in 1925 in Blaricum, where he lived. Cornelis Vreedenburgh lived in Laren at the time and both men knew each other. Perhaps they drank coffee once in the then hotel Hamdorff on the Brink in Laren. Vreedenburgh painted a lot of water in his life, such as lakes and rivers, but very rarely the sea. That makes the attached work extra special. He probably painted it somewhere abroad (judging by the rocks on the right). At first, Mr Beckman thought the work was too well-behaved, after which Vreedenburgh made the waves a little rougher.
Cornelis Vreedenburgh was a landscape painter, etcher and watercolourist.
Cornelis Vreedenburgh (Woerden, 25 August 1880 - Laren, 27 June 1946) was a Dutch painter. He is counted among the Laren School.
