The cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), also called plaice, plaiceverd, schollevaar or cabbage goose, is a rather large and conspicuous bird. The cormorant, common in Western Europe, belongs to the family of cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae), of which 26 to 42 species are known. They are all fairly large waterfowl, living mainly on fish.
