Commemoration of airborne Polish paratroopers during Market Garden near Driel in 2019.
On September 22, 2019, paratroopers were dropped near Driel to commemorate Operation Market Garden.
On September 21, 1944, during Operation Market Garden, about a thousand Polish paratroopers were dropped near Driel. The airborne landings at Driel were carried out under the command of General Stanislaw Sosabowski.
The intention was to use the Driel ferry to cross the Lower Rhine, to provide assistance to the British airborne troops in Oosterbeek. However, the Driel ferry was no longer there and under enemy fire a small part of the Polish troops reached the other side.
