The Catalan city of Girona finds its origins in Roman times. It may not be the first city you think of when planning a city break in Spain, but this atmospheric city is definitely worth a visit.
Besides a cosy city centre with small shops and nice squares, you will find several historical buildings in Girona, including a large cathedral and the Jewish quarter El Call.
One of the most beautiful sights in Girona are the colourful houses on the banks of the river Onyar. These are sometimes called the hanging houses of Girona. The view of the colourful houses is at its best from the various bridges used to cross the river.
