In Puerto Río Tranquilo, a small town on the shores of the huge Lago General Carrera in Chile, a blaze of colour unfolds that beguiles the senses. The lake itself shimmers in an intense blue that ranges from a cool, almost icy turquoise to a deep, rich cobalt blue, depending on the time of day. The surface of the water reflects the changing light of the sky, so that gentle veils of cloud, the warm gold of the morning sun or the fiery red of the evening dance on it like a painting.
Looking out over the plants, some of which are yellow, then white, pink or even purple, this bright blue blends with the lush vegetation that thrives on the slopes of the surrounding mountains. Dense forests of southern beech trees and evergreen shrubs cover the landscape, interspersed with scattered yellow and white flowers that seem to flicker in the wind. After a rain shower, the leaves and mosses glisten in a lush emerald green, while small beads of water shimmer on the flowers like tiny gemstones. When the sun breaks through, the colours intensify even more - the blue of the lake becomes almost surreal, the green glows in hundreds of shades, and in between, the red and orange leaves of some trees, defying the Patagonian wind, set powerful accents.
