A coot on the ice of the Gorssloot in Purmerend during the winterweek of February 2021. Coots have large blue-green swimming legs with spread lobes on the toes. If the coot moves its leg backwards, the lobes open under the water pressure so that the bird moves forward. When the foot moves forward again, the lobes close again. An adult coot has a red iris.
The coot is a protected native species.
