In the Middle Ages, a guesthouse was an institution for the nightly shelter of the homeless. The guests who were offered a place to sleep varied from vagrants to pilgrims. Later, many forms of hospices were established, the most important of which was the care of the sick and elderly. The present hospital, nursing home and care home evolved from the guesthouse.
The foundation of the hospice of Delft is probably due to noblewoman Rikarde, a daughter of the Dutch count Willem I and Aleid van Gelre. The Delft guesthouse was located on the east side of the Koornmarkt. Around 1400 the Sint-Jorisgasthuis was founded at the Noordeinde. The institution on the Koornmarkt has since been called the Old Hospital.
