The Old Church, also known as the Oude Jan or Scheve Jan, is one of the two major ancient churches in Delft, in the Dutch province of South Holland. The Old Church dates back to 1246 and is the oldest church in Delft. A characteristic feature of the Oude Kerk is its leaning tower.
Bartholomeus van der Made undertook the first reconstruction and expansion of the church in the mid-13th century. From that time onwards, the church was called the St. Bartholomew's Church. The old tuff church was extended with two aisles and a choir.
Between 1325 and 1350 a 75 metre high tower in Flemish style with a brick spire and four corner turrets was built in front of the church. At that time the tower was by far the highest building in the area. Only about a century and a half later, in 1496, the higher Nieuwe Kerk was completed,[1] a few years after the tower was built, the side aisles of the church were raised to the level of the nave. The two side choirs and the high choir also date from this period. At the end of this construction period, the church was dedicated to St Hippolytus in 1396.
Coenraet Decker was a printmaker, draughtsman, cartographer born in 1650 in Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands and died there on 1685-03-02.
