A Pierrot and a Harlequin, Pierrot sits there as a declarer of Harlequin with his quiet voice.
These two come as inspiration from works by Paul Cezanne, among others; Cezanne was a lover of carnival.
Picasso too did many carnival-like paintings. Harlequin originally comes from the Commedia dell arte along with Pantalone and Il dotore and Punchinello which again originated in the 17th century in Naples Italy as street theatre.
In this painting, they are accompanied by a cat/cat who, like them, has a stubborn nature and is thus in good company, so who keeps who company.
