Pico do Areeiro is the third highest peak on the Portuguese island of Madeira and stands at an altitude of 1818 metres above sea level. Located in Madeira's central mountains, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island due to its breathtaking views and accessibility.
On clear days, visitors can enjoy panoramic views stretching across the island and even to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo. Pico do Areeiro is known for its beautiful sunrises and sunsets, making it a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers.
Several hiking trails start or run through Pico do Areeiro, the most famous being the trail to Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest peak. This challenging but rewarding hike offers dramatic landscapes, including jagged peaks, deep valleys and lush vegetation.
The area around Pico do Areeiro is home to unique ecosystems and endemic species of plants and animals, some of which are found only in Madeira. The summit is an excellent location for bird watching, especially for spotting Madeira's fire goldcrest, the island's smallest bird.
The weather on Pico do Areeiro can be quite different from that in Madeira's coastal areas. It can be much cooler and windier, and the summit is often shrouded in clouds. Visitors are advised to dress in layers and be prepared for sudden weather changes, and hikers should be well prepared with the right equipment and supplies.
