About the artwork

Church in the evening in the Bergkwartier in Deventer with lighting.
Artisanal crafts in Hanseatic atmosphere. The Bergkwartier, including the famous Walstraat, houses next to the Bergkerk a variety of craft shops, restaurants and galleries. The authentic streets with beautiful historic buildings in Hanseatic atmosphere, form the backdrop of the annual Dickens Festival.

The Bergkerk was built in the years 1198-1209, near the then Deventer harbour quarter. It was founded in the heyday of the Hanseatic city by Norbertines from Varlar (near Coesfeld) in Westphalia. The church, a Romanesque cross basilica, was dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. The building is very similar to churches in the Baltic countries. It was consecrated by the bishop of Livonia.

In the 15th century the Bergkerk underwent various renovations, giving it a late-Gothic character. The two characteristic spires, for example, were built in this period (the lower part of the towers is still original).

In 1580, the church passed into the hands of the Protestants and from then on the building belonged to the Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk. The interior was, as usual, immediately stripped of the Catholic features. The wall and vault paintings disappeared under a layer of whitewash.
