The brig is a relatively small, fast sailing ship with two masts that occurred as early as the 16th century. As a warship, the type was in use until the nineteenth century, armed with 12-18 guns. A brig has two square-rigged masts, supplemented by staysails. Behind the main mast is a longitudinal sail, the brig sail.

Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (Blåkrog, Jutland, Denmark 2 January 1783 - Copenhagen, 22 July 1853), usually referred to as C.W. Eckersberg, was a Danish painter. He was one of the founders of the Golden Age of Danish painting. In his painting, he focused on portraits, genre paintings (some of them historical) and shipping paintings. In 1803, he was accepted at the Royal Danish Academy of Art.
