The Chilean lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) is a bird in the family of lapwings and plovers (Charadriidae). The Chilean lapwing is found throughout South America with the exception of the Andes and Amazon. The Chilean lapwing prefers open grasslands and for this reason has benefited greatly from the increase in livestock production in South America. In addition to mainland South America, the bird has been found in Trinidad since 1961 and in Tobago since 1974.The bird breeds like the lapwing, which occurs in Europe, on a simple nest located in the grass, but also sometimes on just plowed land. Also the way of flying and the way of driving away predators resembles the way of the (European) lapwing. Outside the breeding season, the Chilean lapwing mainly stays in wet areas, where it searches for food, mainly insects, especially at night.
