About ‘Children of the Sea, Joseph of Israel’
Children of the Sea, Jozef Israels (1872)
Performance titled 'Children of the Sea'. Four children play with a toy sailing boat in the water on the beach. The eldest boy is carrying a child on his back.
This lovely scene contains a message. The fisherman's children with their shabby clothes and paltry toys give us a picture of their future. The eldest boy carries the burden of the family on his shoulders and the little boat stands for the heavy life at sea. Jozef Israëls first painted this theme in 1863. It was very popular and Israel repeated it many times afterwards.
