Colourful illustration with a wink. Loosely based on the charro's. The charro is a traditional type of horseman from Mexico.
The word originally comes from the Basque txar, meaning "someone from the countryside" or "rough person". Charro's have their origins in the charreada, the Mexican version of rodeo, practised by the most skilled horsemen on hacienda's. The charro's also borrowed much from the chinaco's, the liberal cavalrymen who fought French and imperial troops during the French intervention in Mexico. Charro's are often compared to North American cowboys, although this is not entirely correct, as the Mexican equivalent of the cowboy is the vaquero. In addition, there are many Mexicans who believe that the cowboy is precisely the North American version of the charro, as cowboys borrowed some of their clothing style from the charro.
