Tips for use

About ‘Chan Chan: a testimony to the Chimu empire in Peru’ by Frank Photos

The archaeological site of Chan Chan, near the town of Huanchaco in Peru, is one of the most impressive discoveries of the Chimu empire. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this monumental site bears witness to the incredible organisation and grandeur of the Chimu civilisation, which flourished between the 9th and 15th centuries. Chan Chan was the capital of the Chimu kingdom, and its remains are spread over several square kilometres, including palaces, temples and residential quarters, all built with an impressive mastery of adobe architecture. The walls decorated with geometric patterns and the large enclosures are perfect examples of the craftsmanship of the period. The site is also famous for its burial complexes, where the Chimu buried their sovereigns and elites. A walk through these ruins will immerse you in Peru's ancient history and in the splendour of a civilisation that has disappeared, but whose legacy continues to fascinate.
