The deep geothermal water under the Champagne Pool is about 260 °C, but the surface water temperature is about 75 °C by losing heat to the atmosphere. The siliceous geothermal fluid is supersaturated with metalloid compounds such as orpiment and stibnite, which precipitate and form orange underwater deposits. The colourful deposits contrast sharply with the greyish-white silica sinter around the Champagne Pool.
