A courtesan was a lady-in-waiting, but the term soon acquired the connotation of mistress of a prince or high courtier, and by extension of other persons of higher rank. In 19th century France and during the Second Republic (1848-1852) the term was adopted for a distinguished demi-mondaine: a woman of light morals who moved in higher circles and who was accepted at court because of her civilised manners and elegance.
