De Haar consists of an extensive terrain in which, in addition to the main building, there are gardens and buildings such as a chapel. The adjacent village also has a strong relationship with the castle and the whole falls under protected village conservation.
Castle De Haar is no longer owned by the Van Zuylen family. In 2000, the castle and the surrounding park (55 ha) became the property of Stichting Kasteel De Haar. The Landgoed Haarzuilens (350 ha) came into the possession of the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten. Only the châtelet remained the property of the family.[10] However, the family still respects the tradition of September occupation, they retain the right to live in the castle that month.
