Gravensteen is a fortified moated castle located in the East Flemish city of Ghent with a virtually intact defence system. The current castle managed by Historische Huizen Gent dates from 1180 and was the residence of the Counts of Flanders until 1353. It was originally called new castle ('novum castellum). It was later repurposed as a court, prison, mint printing house and even a cotton factory.
Count Baudouin I (837-879) is said to have had the first fortification erected as a defence against Norman raids.
