About ‘Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome by night’ by Thomas Bugdoll

On the right bank of the Tiber rises the almost 2000-year-old Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome.
Castel Sant'Angelo was originally built as the tomb of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in 139 AD. The mausoleum was eventually converted into a military fortress that protected Rome during the Middle Ages. Since then, it has served as a papal residence, a prison during the Renaissance and today as one of Rome's museums.

As the largest church in the world, St Peter's Basilica is more than just the most important building in Christendom. It is the centrepiece of the Vatican City, from which the popes have carried the word of God to the whole world. The basilica is visited by millions of pilgrims every year and is also a cultural, historical and architectural landmark. St Peter's Basilica houses treasures dating back thousands of years, including paintings, sculptures and artefacts.
