The Green Orphanage was established in 1621 by the States of Groningen. In 1660, the States of Groningen ceded the Jacobijnerkerk to a deaconess orphanage, also known as the Blue Orphanage. The colours refer to the costumes of the orphans. The Green Orphanage was also the cradle of the current University Medical Center Groningen.
