The Capitol in the Capitol Hill district of the U.S. capital Washington is the seat of the United States' parliament, the legislature. The Capitol is the seat of both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives of the United States of America, collectively referred to as Congress.
Construction of the Capitol began on September 18, 1793. The cornerstone of the Capitol was laid by George Washington (dressed as a Freemason) in a Masonic ceremony. During the construction, the architects were frequently inspired by Roman architectural types and (Masonic) symbolism. Slaves were used for the construction, cutting and transport of the stones. The Senate portion was completed in 1800, while the House of Representatives portion was not completed until 1811.
