The Strait of Georgia lies between Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia, with the border between Canada and the United States to the south. The Strait of Georgia is about two-thirds the length of Vancouver Island and runs from the southern tip to the north, where the water narrows almost to the mainland coast. This northern area is full of small islands and fast tidal passages. Beyond that point, Johnstone Strait extends northwest to Queen Charlotte Strait and then the open Pacific Ocean.
