I walk through the streets of the ancient island of Ortygia in the Sicilian city of Syracuse. On this island is the historic center of Syracuse. It is a labyrinth of small streets and narrow alleys. Occasionally the streets lead to a square with a church and a restaurant or bar. Ortygia looks like a botanical city garden in some places. Many houses have plants at the front door, there are plants in front of a wall or there are plants on a windowsill or near a window. Often the plants are cacti. Sometimes you can look into a courtyard and see a single cactus or there are a number of cacti together. The advantage of a cactus is that it requires little maintenance. In Sicily you will see many cacti in nature anyway. It is a rugged island and these plants fit in well.
