This buzzard assumes the mantle position above its prey, spying around to see if there are any other birds around. He does this to hide his prey from other hijackers on the coast who might try to snatch his tasty morsel. I took this picture from a bird hide near a clearing in the forest. I was absolutely thrilled to see such a beautiful large bird of prey up close and it took me a while to grab my camera. Luckily just in time to take this picture because shortly afterwards it flew off with its prey a little further into the forest. I could still see it but unfortunately couldn't take any more photos. The brown and white striped pattern in its wing and tail feathers are clearly visible, as is its yellow pointed bill.
